Ocean Ana Rising was incorporated in January 2006 as a non-profit arts education organization dedicated to co-creating social change through the incubation of theatre and multimedia projects alongside vital community engagement and outreach programming.

Ocean Ana Rising/OAR, a non-profit 501c3 organization, was founded out of an urgent need to tell our stories. We are dedicated to co-creating with community, centering art as a  catalyst for social change through a specific emphasis on performance, learning exchanges, and forum conversations. It is only when we are able to share our life experiences that we can move beyond division and isolation toward connection and change.

Starting in 2006, OAR has produced workshop productions for plays in development at the Warehouse Theatre in Washington, D.C., the D.C. Fringe Festival, and in partnership with the National Black Theatre for the, I Am Soul Series in Harlem, New York. OAR also co-curated the Women on Wednesdays Art and Culture Project in partnership with Betty’s Daughter Arts Collaborative and The Brecht Forum for three years in NYC. In addition to this, OAR’s teaching artists have facilitated Safe Spaces Arts Outreach workshops for D.C. Crime Victims Compensation Unit, Alternate Roots Annual Meeting, The Teach In and Healing Cipher for the Women on Wednesdays Arts and Culture Project, the Amnesty International Human Rights Festival, and communities of youth in cities throughout the country.
